Disclaimer & A Humanitarian Plea

From the perspective of a person who:

  • grew up with Islamic practices and teachings, have a strong understanding of the Islamic community’s history & culture, and have dedicated these last few months into researching the history of Palestine and the current conflict.

  • have close relations with a Jewish community through work over multiple years as a Chorus Master for a Jewish choir and have a strong sense of love and responsibility towards the community, to not spread misinformation about their religion, history and perspective. Have dedicated these last few months into researching and learning the history behind the promise land of Israel and the teachings of Judaism.

  • A humanitarian who believes all lives matter, regardless of the conflict.

The issues discussed in this article may be triggering to those within the Jewish, Islamic, Israel and Palestine community. A note to please remember your humanity and be respectful to one another during these trying times. Though unbiased, I will voice out against the human rights violations and international crimes that have been committed. Currently, the death toll in Gaza has reached 21,000. From a humanitarian perspective, there should never be any justifications in taking the lives of 21,000 people in any community, let alone through barbaric means and being disrepectfully celebrated.

This is a humanitarian plea to drop all weapons and for the international governments to take immediate action by intervening to end the massacres, without, the use of violence. We cannot allow the massacres to continue, and we the public, must continue to educate ourselves on the matter, especially as we influence each other to fight for justice on behalf of others, it is only fair to continue to stay informed.

The root of the conflict#1: Jerusalem

the root of the conflict: jerusalem

The importance of Jerusalem in Judaism

The history of the Jewish people begins with Abraham, and the story of Abraham begins when God tells him to leave his homeland, promising Abraham and his descendants, a new home, in the land of Canaan that is central to Judaism. The land of Canaan in the modern day is the land that we now know that encompasses Israel or arguably Palestine/ Occupied Palestine, the West Bank and Gaza, Jordan, and the southern portions of Syria and Lebanon. Jews have lived in this land from the time of its original conquest by Joshua more than 3200 years ago until the present day, though Jews were not always in political control of the land, and Jews were not always the majority of the land's population and were at times a small minority.

The Talmud indicates that the land itself is so holy that merely walking in it can gain you a place in the World to Come. Prayers for a return to Jerusalem are included in daily prayers. Living outside of Israel is viewed as an unnatural state for a Jew. These beliefs have led to the Zionist movement, a political movement dedicated to the creation of a Jewish state, which resulted in the establishment of Israel in 1948. However, some orthodox jews disagree with this movement and maintain the perspective that the promised land of Israel can only be regained miraculously from God, at the time of redemption.

The importance of Jerusalem in Islam

Jerusalem acts as the holy city where two momentous events in the life of Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) life occurred and bear special significance in Islam including the institution of Prayer (Salah): the second pillar of Islam, The Mi`raj (the Prophet’s Ascension) and the change of the qiblat from Jerusalem to Makkah.

Muslims historically have held the longest rule of the city of Jerusalem, for thirteen centuries from the middle of the seventh century (638 A.D.) to the beginning of the twentieth century (1917) with the exception of 103 years of Crusader domination. Prior to the establishment of Israel in 1948, the land was known as the Ottomon empire Filastin, instead of the Hellenised version first recorded by Herodotus as “Palaistinē.”, which was later taken control of by the British and the land became the British mandated Palestine. Majority of the population, at the time of Israel’s establishment in 1948 were Palestinian muslims, which made having a Jewish only state difficult for the large population of residents of the land, leading to the displacement of 750,000 Palestinians.

All these reasons combined becomes the source of the ongoing disagreements between Israel vs Palestine’s rightful ownership to the land that still occur to date.

Does one exist, but not the other? #2: The Zionist Movement

Is it israel or palestine? who's country is it?
Social media version of this article available @farahdiyanah13 @fd13music

The Zionist Movement

We hear the terms Zionist often in discussions regarding the conflict, but what does it actually mean?

In the late 1800, a political movement dedicated to the creation of a Jewish state was formed. This movement was known as the Zionist movement. It is important to note that Zionism was not a religious movement; it was primarily political.

There are jews in Israel and around the world that disagree with the Zionist movement and do not identify themselves as a ‘Zionist’. Jews who criticize or oppose Zionism are usually Orthodox and maintain the perspective that the promised land of Israel can only be regained miraculously from God, at the time of redemption. Many actively work to dismantle in their view, the secular, man-made State of Israel. The best-known group of the Jewish religious anti-Zionists are the Neturei Karta.

Nowadays, the word Zionist is often used as a negative label, with people no longer distinguishing between the words 'Jew', 'Israeli' and 'Zionist'. It is important to understand that not all jews live in Israel or arguably Palestine/occupied Palestine, not every civilian of Israel is Jewish and neither do all Jewish Israelis have the goal to take away more of the land to claim as their own.

British mandate & the broken promises

In 1917, in order to win Jewish and Arab support for Britain's First World War effort, the British made two conflicting promises to both parties, which led to the issues we see today. The British Balfour Declaration promised the establishment of a Jewish national home in Ottoman-controlled Palestine. However, the British had also promised Arab nationalists that a united Arab country, covering most of the Arab Middle East, would result, if the Ottoman Turks were defeated. When the fighting ended in 1918, with the Ottoman Empire defeated on every front, neither promise was delivered.

In 1920, Britain assumed responsibility over the Ottoman Empire Palestine, newly referred to as British mandated Palestine, under a League of Nations Mandate. During the next two decades, over 100,000 Jews entered the country. Over this period the Jewish population of Palestine, composed principally of immigrants, increased from less than 10 per cent in 1917 to over 30 per cent in 1947. Palestinians’ demands for independence and resistance to Jewish immigration led to a rebellion in 1937.

The impact of the Holocaust on this conflict.

The Holocaust had a major impact on this situation, a horrifying genocide that murdered six million Jewish men, women, and children by the Nazi German regime, its allies and collaborators, leaving jews to be displaced all over the world. During the Second World War, the British restricted entry into Palestine of European Jews escaping Nazi persecution. This policy provoked armed Jewish resistance to drive the British out.

The goal to create a Jewish majority state for the holocaust survivors and displaced jews was the next step forward, arguably on one hand, a strategic move by the British, as a pivot of control not only in Palestine but the entire Middle East and aids to prevent further resistance against them, but on the other hand, the promise of a united Arab country had yet to be fulfilled, and majority of the population of the land in mandated Palestine were Palestinian Muslims.

In 1947, despite being a problem they created, the British Government referred it to the United Nations to take over. In November 1947, the United Nations recommended the partition of Palestine and the establishment of separate Arab and Jewish states. On 14 May 1948 Israel was established, 15 May 1948 the British mandate ended, and the establishment led to the first Arabic-Israeli war, followed by Nakba 1948, the ethnic cleansing of Palestine.

Nakba 1948 and Naksa 1967

After the Arab-Israeli war ended with Israeli forces controlling approximately 78 percent of historical Palestine, Nakba 1948 occurred, the ethnical cleansing Palestine. Israel forces expelled 750,000 Palestinians from their homes and lands. Hundreds of Palestine villages were depopulated, homes were destroyed, and thousands of Palestinians were killed. Many ended up stateless, in refugee camps, displaced to the surrounding Arab states. Captured Palestinians were forced to change their nationalities from Palestine to Israel. In the three years following the war, about 700,000 Jews immigrated to Israel from Europe and Arab lands, with one third of them having left or been expelled from their countries of residence in the Middle East. These refugees were absorbed into Israel in the One Million Plan, a plan for the immigration of one million Jews from Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa into Mandatory Palestine, within a timeframe of 18 months, in order to establish a state in that territory.

Gaza strip, West Bank and East Jerusalem was the remaining land of historical Palestine, which were then occupied by Israel in 1967, leading to issues of the current conflict. Naksa 1967, Israel seized the remaining Palestinian territories of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, Gaza Strip, as well as the Syrian Golan Heights and the Egyptian Sinai Peninsula, in a matter of six days. By the end of the war, Israel had expelled another 300,000 Palestinians from their homes.

Israel-Palestine conflict: Self-defense or genocide? #3: The leaked document

Israel self-defense or israel genocide?
Social media version of this article available @farahdiyanah13 @fd13music

The leaked document

The ongoing narrative of the current massacre of Palestinians have been justified by Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, as "self-defense", with the goal to "eliminate Hamas", denying the claims that Israel is carrying out a genocide on Palestinians stating that there is no evidence for the claim. Recently, a leaked document produced by Israel's intelligence ministry, however, has been leaked, revealing the truth behind the false narrative. Issued on 13 October, the document has recommended the ethnic cleansing of Gaza with the enclave's 2.3 million Palestinian population expelled to Egypt's Sinai peninsula. an official at the Ministry of Intelligence confirmed that the ten-page document is authentic but "was not supposed to reach the media," Mekovit noted. The existence of the document does not necessarily indicate that its recommendations are being implemented by Israel’s security establishment. However, Recent statements by Israeli government officials and actions by the Israeli army in Gaza suggest the plan is indeed being implemented.

The report, titled 'Options for a policy regarding Gaza's civilian population', recommends that Gazans, more than half of whom have already been displaced by weeks of Israeli bombardment, temporarily be herded into "tent cities" in Sinai, before cities are constructed in a "resettled area" in the north of the peninsula to house them. The paper was purportedly published on 13 October, six days after Israel began its bombardment of the densely populated Gaza Strip. The document was revealed in full by the site Local Call. Since 7 October, Israeli officials have repeatedly issued warnings to Palestinians to move to southern Gaza in advance of a looming ground invasion, and that they would be safer in the South. Attacks in the South, however, have now escalated, where majority of the remaining population travelled to for safety.

This document, reports from Israel officials and the continuous massacres we view daily with our own eyes on social media, with more than 70 percent of the total number of casualties being women and children, Hospitals, Mosques and schools have been targetted, displacing 80% of Gaza’s population. All these combined acts cannot be justified and we must hold the Israel government and Israel forces accountable, for the clear act of genocide.

Events leading up to the current genocide #4: Israel's illegal occupation: 50 years of dispossession

Events leading up to Israel genocide
Social media version of this article available @farahdiyanah13 @fd13music

50 years of dispossession

Since the illegal occupation of Israel in the remaining Palestine territories which began in June 1967, Israel’s unjust policies of land confiscation, illegal settlement and dispossession, coupled with rampant discrimination, have inflicted immense suffering on Palestinians, depriving them of their basic rights. UN consensus view of the international community is that Israeli settlements are illegal and constitute a violation of international law.

Occupying Palestine territories with zero repercussions, Israel’s military rule disrupts every aspect of daily life in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. It continues to affect whether, when and how Palestinians can travel to work or school, go abroad, visit their relatives, earn a living, attend a protest, access their farmland, or even access electricity or a clean water supply.

Palestinians have had restrictions enforced on their movement, access to their own water, land and other natural resources. The communities have also been violently attacked by the Israeli military and settlers with unjust imprisonment of civilians, without trials, being a regular occurrance. Israel has also adopted a complex web of military laws to crush dissent against its policies, and senior government officials have branded Israelis advocating for Palestinian rights as “traitors”.

Israel controls movement in and out of Gaza

Palestinians’ freedom of movement in the Occupied Territories lies completely at the mercy of the state’s whims, the instructions given to soldiers at the local (DCO), and the way in which they implement them. Israel has control over Gaza’s borders, land and sea. They control movement of people and material in and out of Gaza, including Palestinians entry and exit, as well as Gaza‘s access to water, electricity and humanitarian aid.

It is internationally known that Israel forces have been abusing their power in the last 75 years since illegally occupying Palestine territories, and have taken away basic human rights of Palestinians in Gaza, which include but not limited to demolishing homes and structures, appropriation of hectares of Palestinian lands, imprisoning civilians without a trial, cutting of electricity and limiting to few hours of use, and multiple other violations of basic human rights.

Palestine does not have an independent government, neither do they have military power or full control over its land which makes Gaza widely known as the largest military prison in the world. Children make up nearly half of the population and as many as five Israel-Gaza wars have occurred since 2008.

All the important dates, including Hamas attack October 7

February 26 2023. Huwara pogrom occurred and hundreds of Israeli settlers attacked Huwara and 3 nearby villages, torching hundreds of Palestinian homes, even some with people in them, businesses, a school, and numerous vehicles.

June 28 2023. 5 more days of Pogrom occurred on a series of attacks on 17 Palestinian villages across the Occupied West Bank. Gangs of armed settlers, often in the hundreds, lighting dozens of homes and cars on fire and shooting at Palestinian homes.

July 7 2023. Israeli military and forces carried out the largest raid in a West Bank city in over 20 years for several days, causing widespread destruction qualifying it as a war crime under international law including a bombing campaign, raid of Jenin Public Hospital, firing teargas and live ammunition and bombing of Jenin Freedom Theater. After the Israel forces withdrew, residents remained without access to clean drinking water or power, and around 80% of homes in the area sustained damage during the assault.

October 7. Hamas, Arabic acronym for ‘Islamic Resistance Movement’, which many people do not know, as former Israel official, Segev, admits was established and funded by Israel itself in the late 1970s, retaliated Israel’s continued violent acts over the last 50 years including the pogroms and raid that occurred in 2023, by killing 1200 Israelis and abducting 250 people.

Western media has very biasedly reported October 7 as a "suprise terrorist attack", completely disregarding the last 50 years of Israel’s illegal occupation and unjust crimes committed during the February 26-July 7 period, and not holding the Israeli forces accountable for their crimes, that arguably, resulted in the Oct 7 attacks.

It is also important to note, that the violent crimes committed by Hamas are not justified and must also be held accountable, however, Israel government must also be held accountable for 50 years of illegal occupation, international violation of human rights and the current ongoing genocide that has resulted in the death of 21,000 Palestinian lives.

World's first digitally accessible genocide #5: The age of social media.

Gaza world's first digitally accessible genocide
Social media version of this article available @farahdiyanah13 @fd13music

Cut to our present day, digital viewings of the genocide are being displayed daily through our phone screens, immortalised in digital timelines on Social Media apps like Instagram and Tik Tok. Live video recordings of airstrikes destroying buildings, trapped civilians in between concrete who are dead, alive or badly injured screaming in terror, civilians in devastation hugging the bodies of their killed loved ones and babies getting pulled out of the rubble, are examples of videos being posted by civilians and journalists curently located onsite in Gaza that are shocking the world. Before, we relied fully on news channel and media coverage, which currently are very biasedly against Palestinians, not explaining the full truth, but with the age of social media, everyone has been able to view the massacres with their own eyes and International protests have occured all over the world, resulting in the "Free Palestine" movement, demanding a ceasefire. Despite so, the Israel government has insisted to continue, in the name of terminating Hamas for their attacks on October 7.

Murders of over 21,000 Palestinians since Oct 7th, including the 7,000 people that are still missing, either under the rubble or their fate is still unknown, 6,600 children and 4,000 women were among the reported victims, with more than 41,316 others injured. More than 70 percent of the total number of casualties are women and children, including more than 4,700 children and women are getting murdered, is a clearly reckless act from a government who is acting from a place of anger from having their authority undermined, and unleasing their rage towards a group they already discriminate against, leading to the genocide we see today. Airstrikes are still occurring daily to date, and getting deadlier with zero remorse.

Why U.S. Supports Israel #6: The billion dollar question

Why U.S. supports israel? the billion dollar question
Social media version of this article available @farahdiyanah13 @fd13music

The U.S.-Israel close relations is known internationally, with the U.S. providing about $3.8bn of defense aid annually, consistently blocks UN Security Council resolutions condemning Israel occupation, and backs its military offensives publicly. With the current situation being the deadly way that it is, the billion-dollar question is, why? Why do the U.S. not only defends Israel’s decision but continues to fund them?

Strategically, Israel is a strong ally that can benefit the U.S. in multiple ways. Israel is the number 1 seller of military drones. As an ally to the U.S., they do not allow sales to China and Russia. With an annual budget of about $3bn and 7,000 staff, Israels ‘Mossad’ is the second-largest espionage agency in the Western world after the CIA. Having Israel as an ally, will in turn allow them to have access to Israel’s Technology and Intelligence services. Since the Cold War, Israel has been an important ally of American Middle East strategy. American presidents and strategists came to see Israel as a useful tool for containing Soviet influence in the Middle East, which according to the U.S. were significant among Arab states and used diplomatic and military support to weave Israel firmly into the anti-Soviet bloc.

Israel has never declared their nuclear weapons, neither did they sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in 1968. However, the U.S. believes Israel possesses them. Justifications of keeping Israel in a strong position, avoids potential future nuclear proliferation in its region. This is of course, open to debate, as the U.S. has had history of claiming Iraq having nuclear weapons, which have deemed to be untrue, and caused a 20 year catastrophic war. Morally, the general public argues and claims that the attacks and acts of genocide that Israel is committing towards Palestine, are similar, if not, exactly the same, as the attacks the U.S. committed towards Iraq.

US support for Israel isn't just about strategic calculations, shared values and foreign policy interests. It also, has been about domestic politics and the way American politicians read American voters. Congressional votes on issues relating to Israel are famously lopsided. The Senate resolution supporting Israel's recent offensives in Gaza passed unanimously, as many "pro-Israel" bills and resolutions do. Admittedly revealing the ongoing issue of the Western views being against the Middle Eastern values and the unspoken truth of islamophobia among Pro-Israel supporters and Americans, which have been made more vocal since Oct 7.

Lastly, of course, involves money. Palestine has 122 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 1.7 billion barrels of oil. All of this is worth around $524 billion. Gaza also has access to the Suez Canal, which set a new record with an annual revenue of $9.4 billion in USD for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2023. Claims include that having strong ties with Israel, will offer the U.S. an opportunity to access these resources and also benefit from them.

Supporting and funding a genocide have outraged international eyes all over the world. The U.S. has shown us that democracy is failing and powers who have disregarded the life of 2 million Palestinians are leading the world. Palestinians lives now, who will be next?

How the world is responding to Palestinians' reaction to the genocide#7: A Story of Faith & Resilience

why are palestinians still so loyal to their faith during genocide
Social media version of this article available @farahdiyanah13 @fd13music

A lot can be said about the ongoing issues. Arguments of terrorist attacks, islamophobia and anti-semitism, continue to take the limelight. However, through the deadly massacres occuring in Gaza, the reaction of Palestinians have continued to shock the world, for once, in a positive light, showing a different side to Islam that the Western media continues to hide away from.

As viral videos of Palestinians saying "Alhamdulillah" (praise be to God), despite watching their homeland be destroyed, their families murdered before their eyes, the bodies of everyone around them physically injured beyond compare, but still announces their trust in God, and give praise to Allah, has resulted in more people reading the Quran, to find out how and why they are able to push through this adversity with such strength. Many have converted into islam and declaring their newly found faith in videos on social media that are going viral.

Free Palestine movements have resulted in the coming together of humanity against the violence, with participants boycotting companies and organisations involved in supporting the genocide all over the world, raising awareness on their firm stance against the massacres. It is important to note, that supporting the end of ceasefire, should never be seen as derogatory act to other communities, but a natural, human reaction, to care for others’ lives.
